1st Grade
I'm excited to be a part of the Burns Park School community. I've been an educator for many years in Louisiana, Maryland, and now Michigan. I've taught Kindergarten, Reading, First Grade, and Media (Librarian). I grew up on a farm in Louisiana in a French-bilingual family.
I have a B.A. in Early Childhood, an M.ED in Elementary/Reading, Additional professional education/training in Maryland at Loyola, and a Ph.D. in Child Development from Michigan State University.
I live in Ann Arbor with my family. We enjoy skiing, biking, running, gardening, hiking and any activity that keeps us moving and outside.

Hi, everyone! My name is Melissa Selva, and I am so happy to be back at home at Burns Park Elementary teaching first grade again this year! I am so pleased to be back among such a supportive, strong, and creative staff. Most of my undergrad and first grad degree are in the biological sciences, with a focus on conservation. Prior to my career in teaching, I worked at the Leslie Science Center and Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum helping run their camps and school-age programs. During the COVID pandemic, I took a hard look at what longevity looked like in my current field, and decided to make a switch to more formal education. I already knew I loved teaching, and was good at it! It was an easy switch, especially with the encouragement of my mother who was a teacher for over 25 years. I received my Master's Degree in Elementary Education in May 2023, with my first full-time position being here at Burns Park.
I originally grew up in California, but have found a new home in Michigan since I moved here in 2016. It truly feels like a place I want to be forever. Outside of school, you might find me reading, crocheting, playing trivia, or catching up with friends over games! I am so thrilled to be blessed with the privilege of teaching and learning alongside all of our learners this year, and look forward to a growth-filled year. Go Penguins!

I am so excited to be teaching first grade this year! This will be my second year teaching at Burns Park and my first time with first grade. Prior to teaching I attended U of M to earn my Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Health and Society. I then stayed at U of M to get my Masters in Elementary Education with certification in teaching English as a second language. My absolute favorite part of being a teacher is building relationships with students and I am looking forward to many many more years of teaching. Outside of school I love to spend time with family and friends, be outside and read. I love being a part of the Burns Park community!
